How do you choose wisely when facing a life-changing decision?

“System 3 Thinking will set you on your way to making wise decisions when uncertainty is high, and the consequences are serious, and this could not be more needed than right now.”

We need a more considered and compassionate way to make decisions if we are to solve the wicked problems of our era. And we need a more balanced and common-sense approach to making life-changing choices for ourselves. How can we choose wisely?

Most of your choices are quick, intuitive, and largely subconscious.

You don’t actually think about it too much. You just go by ‘what feels right’. This is system 1 thinking.

Sometimes you need to stop and figure things out. You need to sit down with a spreadsheet or do some calculations. This is system 2 thinking.
It takes a lot of energy to analyse things and you’re most likely to avoid it if you can.

But what happens when there isn’t enough information to go on? There’s no one to turn to for advice? And you need to make a critical decision that will likely affect the course of your life and the lives of others?

When it comes to choosing wisely with your heart (system 1 thinking) or your head (system 2 thinking), it turns out neither system is definitive. You need a third system of thinking.

"Peter Webb has distilled within one superbly researched and revelatory book, the wisdom associated with dealing with the more complex issues in life. By adopting System 3 Thinking, you will gain fresh insights into navigating a more emergent and connected way of being and take a giant step towards making wiser decisions in your life."

Hi, I am an Australian organisational and integrative psychologist and leadership coach, and I have accumulated decades of research into how people choose wisely or foolishly. For over 30 years I have helped individuals, teams and leaders make better decisions, live a more meaningful life, and make a positive difference in the world.

I gained an Honours Degree in Economics, specialising in organisational psychology, from the University of Queensland in 1977, leading to my early career in organisational development in the mining and energy sectors in Western Australia and Queensland. Then I took a break as a professional actor. My next career move was to train in naturopathic clinical medicine and I conducted several successful practices in South-East Queensland for more than a decade. This led to teaching positions in natural medicine colleges and sales management and education roles for Australian and North American natural pharmaceutical companies. In 2000 I was recognised as one of the pioneers in functional medicine in Australia. After completing a Masters Degree in Applied Science (Psychology of Coaching) at the University of Sydney in 2005 I transitioned into executive coaching and human capital consulting roles for boutique and global consulting firms. I served a 3-year term as Director Research & Curriculum for the ICLIF Executive Education Centre, Asia School of Business based in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia before returning to Australia in 2019. I am now an associate facilitator, organisational psychologist and leadership coach for PBC, Bendelta, and my own consultancy, Intentional Training Concepts. And I maintain a practice of integrative psychology at the National Institute of Integrative Medicine.

I’ve always been curious about decision making and what drives wise choices in my life and in the lives of others. I recognise that we now hold the collected knowledge of humanity in the palm of our hand, yet there has never been a more urgent need for wisdom. See my LinkedIn Profile

“If you are like most people, you’ve probably made a critical decision. You rationally considered all the facts and options, thinking that you were spot-on in your choice, only to have it blow-up in your face. What went wrong? In his book, System 3 Thinking, Peter Webb skillfully unpacks what went wrong. Starting with his explanation of how every decision we make is affected by bias, Peter introduces the concept of System 3 Thinking and outlines how, when the consequences of a decision are serious, we can make a Wise Decision.”

“There is so much I love about this book. Your ability to draw on your personal experiences in an entertaining way. The honesty in telling your own story and applying it to the approach. The practicality of using robust academic insight and applying it to pragmatic frameworks that can be easily used. I’ve read “Thinking Fast and Slow” and “Nudge” and always felt there was something missing in the way they articulate behavioural economics. It feels like you have helped uncover the missing link!”

“It is with pleasure that I highly recommend Peter Webb’s book. Peter brings his many years of wisdom and expertise as a psychologist, leadership coach, author, actor, researcher and educator to this exciting new book. This experience has led him to develop the System 3 model – a new kind of decision making. He explains the System3 model that will help guide us not only in making decisions but making the best decisions to deliver the best outcomes for our lives. This book would be most valuable to all of us for personal or work-related decision making. System 3 is a skillset we can all learn to help us become much more confident, wiser decision makers.”

“Peter Webb is an outstanding coach, psychologist and advisor. Over many years he has guided me through challenges and crises involving people, always offering different perspectives and new ways of thinking about the issue at hand. I am happy to say I am a regular practitioner of the WISE framework in this book and I am an ongoing student of wise decision making. This book is truly about the journey rather than the destination, and Peter Webb is an excellent guide.”

“Peter Webb’s book on System 3 Thinking is perfectly timed. In an era of unprecedented, uncertain change, relying on analytics or gut instinct and past experience for decision making no longer works. System 3 Thinking is the key to moving forward successfully in this new world. Blending engaging personal stories, academic research and practical action-oriented frameworks, Peter’s book is not only an essential guide to wise decision-making, but provides a philosophy for living in the 21st century.”
